How Can Rhinoplasty Define the Nose Tip?
Home How Can Rhinoplasty Define the Nose Tip?

The nose tip can be reshaped, repositioned or supported under the skin to define the tip of the nose during a rhinoplasty. Depending on your choice, an internal stitch may be used, cartilage selected may be reduced (cautiously) or cartilage grafts may be added. The goal is to improve the balance, without compromising support and breathing. A defined tip does not necessarily mean a smaller or sharply pointed nose. The appropriate result depends on your facial proportions, skin thickness, existing structure and personal preferences.
The shape of the tip in rhinoplasty depends on both the cartilage framework and the skin covering the cartilage. Simply removing cartilage does not always improve the tip, especially when excess cartilage causes the shape. During rhinoplasty, the surgeon will carefully consider the following:
Rhinoplasty types refer to either where the surgery takes place or the type of surgery performed. Tip rhinoplasty and full rhinoplasty are the two categories of rhinoplasty based on the extent of surgery performed, while open and closed rhinoplasty are based on how the surgeon approaches the nasal structures.
Tip rhinoplasty is the surgery that concentrates on the lower portion of the nose. It can reshape or use cartilage stitching to treat a rounded, broad, drooping or irregular tip. The surgeon examines the nose as a whole to ensure facial balance and support.
The entire nasal reconstruction (full rhinoplasty) can alter the nasal tip, the nasal bridge, the nasal bones or other parts of the nose. It can be used in combination with the tip refinement if you have concerns other than the tip refinement alone. Appearance, structural support and breathing are factors for planning.
In open rhinoplasty, there is a small cut across the skin between the nostrils (external) and small cuts inside the nose (internal). This will allow for the planned cartilage reshaping, repositioning or grafting. Which depends on your anatomy and the changes that you need.
In a closed nose job, the surgeon makes incisions on the inside of the nose. It can accommodate modifications that can be made with this method. Better results or easier recovery doesn’t necessarily follow from internal incisions.
Internal stitching can be placed carefully and can reshape and/or move sections of the tip cartilage closer together. This can enhance the contours without a lot of skin taken away. The pattern is determined by the shape and strength of the cartilage.
If necessary, cartilage can be cut down or moved in place. If the removal is excessive it will not provide support and result in an unnatural “pitched” appearance. It’s important to preserve structure, just as much as it is to reduce fullness.
Small grafts can reinforce weak spots, enhance projection or create shagrper contours. Cartilage can be taken from the nasal septum, ear or rib as needed and available based on the surgery.
Rotating or projecting the tip may help it look better with the bridge and upper lip. Surgeons should look at the front, side and base view rather than just a single photo.
Yes. The changes in the cartilage may be subtle on thick skin, but noticeable on thin skin. Both do not automatically disqualify surgery, but require different preparation. Patients should be made aware of that:
The surgery for the tip of the nose is called tip surgery and is largely a procedure that focuses on the lower half of the nose. Full rhinoseptoplasty can also alter other features of the nose, such as the bridge, nasal bones, etc. But the tip change can impact the scale, however the entire nose must be checked.
Open surgery involves a small cut in the tissue between the nostrils. Closed surgery involves internal incisions. There is no single best solution for either approach, as access needs dictate which is chosen and the changes planned.
If swelling occurs early, the tip may look wider or less distinct than it should. The tip may become fixed more slowly than other parts, especially if a lot of work has been done or the skin is thicker. Some patients may take up to two years to heal. Usually, the first pictures are not the definitive result. Be sure to follow your surgeon’s recommendations regarding:
